William Loyd West, age 76, of Versailles, passed away Sunday, April 7, 2019, at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Versailles surrounded by his family.
He was born January 31, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, a son of Willis and Uldean Palk West.
Loyd proudly served his country in the United States Navy for ten years.
He lived in Kansas City, Kansas for most of his life; working with the Salvation Army running the shelter for the homeless, along with many other things for the organization.
In 1985, Loyd moved to Versailles where he worked at the Pioneer Restaurant; it was during this time he met his future wife, Joyce.
For 15 years Loyd was employed with the Morgan County RII School in Versailles, he later retired from the Department of Corrections after five years of employment.
He was an avid pilot, looking forward to flying family, friends and several kids in his plane throughout central Missouri. His joy of flying and his generosity of taking people for rides, inspired several students to become pilots in the military.
He loved woodworking; making bird houses and bird feeders or just about anything else he could put together with wood. He also enjoyed working on and restoring old cars, which could often be seen in a local parade.
Loyd never met a stranger, he truly loved being around people, sharing stories and literally welcoming anyone into his home to share a meal. Most of all he loved the time he could spend with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Joyce West of the home; three daughters, Lori Reavis of Kansas City, Kansas; Sheri Hoernig and husband Steve of Benton and Cathy Chadwick of Versailles; one son Marvin “Bud” Cooper of Versailles; two sisters, Linda Appleton of Versailles and Bea Conyers of Kansas City, Kansas; ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, along with other relatives and friends.
Loyd was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and Clyde.
