William U. "Bill" Smith, age 77, of Centertown, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2016, at the California Care Center with his family by his side.
He was born March 21, 1939, in Omaha, Nebraska a son of William F. and Helen B. Barker Smith. On June 11, 1960, in Linn, Bill was united in marriage to Carolyn M. Phillips, who survives at their home.
He was a 1957 graduate of Linn High School and served his country in the Army reserves from 1957 - 1962.
Bill worked in auto body repair, first owning his own shop and later working for Mike Kehoe Ford in Jefferson City. Following his retirement from the repair shop, Bill stayed busy driving cars for the dealership.
Bill and Carolyn enjoyed traveling, especially discovering and exploring the beauty of the western United States. He was an avid drag racing fan and looked forward to attending the races with his son. Bill had a green thumb and could often be found tending to his vegetable garden and later enjoying its bounty at the dinner table. He was a man who kept busy, looked forward to getting a good bargain, or better yet a "freebie" (you should see his hat and T-shirt collection), however, his greatest enjoyment came from the time he could spend with his family.
In addition to his wife of 56 years, he is survived by two children and their spouses, Brian and Donna Smith of Jefferson City and Aimee and Matt Petree of Columbia; one sister, Mildred Dellinger of St. Louis; two grandsons and their wives, Alan W. and Shelly Smith and Nathan A. and Megan Smith; three great grandchildren, Mackenzie M. Smith, Blaine W. Smith and Noah A. Smith, who were his pride and joy, along with other relatives and many friends.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Muriel Fullmer.
