Virginia Hatler Gjovig, age 93, of Russellville, passed away Saturday, October 26, 2013, at Oak Tree Villas in Jefferson City. She was born March 22, 1920, in Enon, the only child of Truman A. and Grace Russell Hogg. On November 30, 1964, in California, Virginia was united in marriage to Maurice Gjovig, who preceded her in death on January 26, 1971.
She was a graduate of Russellville High School and Central Missouri College in Warrensburg, with a degree in Education. Virginia taught in the public schools in Moniteau, Cole and Jackson counties. She returned to the Russellville area in 1979 to care for her mother. She was a member of the Enon Baptist Church. Virginia loved teaching, especially the challenge of the young boys who were considered a little mischievous. She enjoyed playing the piano and traveling throughout the United States with her husband and her mother. She was also an avid animal lover, with a certain fondness for dogs and cats. Survivors include a stepson, Jon Gjovig and wife Lois of Overland Park, Kansas; special family members, John and Joanna Russell, Kay and Danny Green, Jane Russell, Marilyn and Donald Gilliam, Becky Russell and Alan Russell, along with a step grandson, four great step grandchildren, other family members and friends. Virginia was also preceded in death by her parents and a step grandson.
Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Monday, October 28, at the Enon Baptist Church with Pastor Gary Digby officiating. Interment will be in the Enloe Cemetery west of Russellville. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until service time at the church on Monday. Memorial contributions are suggested to Enon Baptist Church or the Salvation Army.
