Vern Dean Steinmeyer, age 85, of Stover, passed away Saturday, February 27, 2016, at his home.
He was born April 30, 1930 to Henry and Johannah Alpers Steinmeyer on their family farm near Stover. He was baptized May 18, 1930 and confirmed May 28, 1944 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in rural Benton County.
On April 19, 1969 he was united in marriage to Norma Caroline Walther, who preceded him in death on May 11, 2005.
Vern Dean grew up in the Stover and Cole Camp areas, where he attended several small country schools. He obtained his work ethic by working alongside his father on the farm.
In the summer of 1947, Vern Dean and his brother, Lawrence hitchhiked to Kansas and then to Colorado to work as harvesters. In the summer of 1948, they both went to Montana; each working for a farmer in the same area. They pooled some of their resources and purchased a 1932 Ford V-8 coupe, fixed its mechanical issues and drove it home to Missouri at the end of the summer. His senior year of high school, Vern Dean worked for J.B. Parker in the mornings and evenings during the week.
He was a 1949 graduate of Stover High School.
From the winter of 1949 until the summer of 1950, he worked in a blacksmith shop. That summer he harvested wheat with Leo Jones from Texas to Canada and in the fall he returned home to work with his father on the farm.
In January of 1951, he began work at the Stover Hatchery until joining the United States Marine Corps on February 21, 1952. He received his honorable discharge from the USMC on February 12, 1954. After returning to Stover he went back to work at the Stover Hatchery until the summer of 1973.
In 1973, he became self-employed. He bought the Hatchery's Feed Truck and feed route, distributing feed to contract growers in the Central Missouri area, retiring in 1992.
Always wanting to stay busy, he continued to work for area farmers doing odd jobs. In 1996 he started mowing yards, area cemeteries, and churches until the end of the 2015 season.
Vern took great enjoyment and satisfaction in working hard and serving those around him.
He was a faithful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stover.
Vern Dean is survived by two sons, David and Tim Steinmeyer both of Stover; a niece and a nephew.
Along with his parents and his wife, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Martin and Lawrence Steinmeyer; and one sister, Lela Mae Steinmeyer.
