TSgt. Walter W. "Walt" Branaugh, US Air Force (Ret.) age 84, formerly of Stover, died Sunday evening, November 8, 2009, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg.
He was born February 1, 1925, in Geddes, South Dakota, son of George and Irene B. Shafer Branaugh. On September 13, 1952, in Yangton, South Dakota, Walt was united in marriage to Grace A. Billings and she survives at their home in Sedalia.
Walt retired from the US Air Force in July of 1964, serving 21 years in the Armed Forces. He did Tours of duty from 1943-1949 in World War II with the 8th Bomb Squadron and 1951-1952 in the Korean War.
A few years after his retirement, Walt and Grace moved south of Stover and made it their home for several years. Walt was active in the Stover Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Harry Hayes and wife Pauline of Hughesville; Darrel Hayes of Huntley, Illinois and Merry (Branaugh) Moore of Sedalia; six grandchildren, Donnie and James Moore, Michael and Clint Hayes and Jeff and Bradley Hayes, five great grandchildren, Samantha, Kyle and Aiden Hayes and Jay and Luke Moore, three great-great grandchildren, Alexander, LillyRuth and Allison Hayes, also other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.
Graveside services, with military funeral honors, will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, November 12, at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville with Rev. Jim Downing officiating.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. -11:00 A.M. Thursday, November 12, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Stover Volunteer Fire Department.
