S. Darlene Runyan, age 78, of Stover, passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2015, at her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born October 16, 1937, in Scotch Ridge, Iowa the only child of Henry Franklin "Bud" and Vera Lela Andruss Dilks. On October 5, 1958, in Indianola, Iowa, Darlene was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Merrill Runyan, who survives at their home.
She was a 1955 graduate of Indianola High School, where she was a majorette. She was also semi-professional dancer, performing as an opening act with the Keith Killinger Band at State Fairs and winning a trip to appear on the Ted Mack show in New York.
For many years Darlene worked as a substitute teacher in various school districts in northwestern Missouri, where her husband was the principal. Merrill and Darlene later co-owned Imperial Marble Inc. in North Kansas City.
She was a member of the Soroptimist Club in North Kansas City and a member of the Southern Heights United Methodist Church in Leavenworth, Kansas.
In August of 2009, Merrill and Darlene retired to the Stover community and transferred their membership to the Stover United Methodist Church.
Darlene always stayed busy, whether it was reading a good book, working crossword puzzles, crocheting, or traveling with her husband. She was a devoted wife, terrific mother and the "Best Grandma," who turned the time she spent with her grandchildren into magical moments of tea parties, baton twirling lessons, and making mud pies. Creating memories and being with her family is what she loved doing the most.
In addition to her husband of 57 years, she is survived by three children, Tracie Hoover and fiancé Elonzo King of Ozark; Tonya Runyan of Kansas City, and Terrill Runyan and wife Anita of Leavenworth, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Shelby, Ethan, Morgan, Kurtis, Kole, Kloe, and Korian, along with other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
