Professor Walter Somerville Johnson

Professor Walter Somerville Johnson, age 75, of Gravois Mills, died Sunday, May 30, 2010, at Good Shepherd Care Center in Versailles.
He was born June 27, 1934, in Kansas City, Kansas a son of Carl Gustaf and Lucille Watts Johnson. On November 8, 1979, in Winfield, Kansas, he was united in marriage to Charlotte Quigley Smith and she survives at their home.
He was a graduate of North Kansas City High School, University of Missouri-Kansas City and IBM Technical College.
Professor Johnson was President of a private business school, retiring in 1990.
He was two-term President of the Pre-Medical Club at the University of Missouri from 1963-1964, was the recipient of the Mr. "Kansas" Award in 1975, was an ad-hoc member of the Accrediting Commission of National Association of Trade and Technical Schools in 1982, and was bestowed Professorship from the United States Department of Education in Washington, D.C.
For the past 16 years, Professor and Mrs. Johnson have made their home in Gravois Mills.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Brian K. Johnson and wife Kris, Jeffrey M. Johnson and wife Heather and Kevin S. Johnson and wife Aubrie all of Wichita, Kansas; one stepson, Gerald L. Smith and wife Cynthia of College Station, Texas; one stepdaughter, Karen L. Gotski and husband Kenneth of Colorado Springs, Colorado; one brother, Edwin C. Johnson and wife Marian of Shell Knob; two sisters, Victoria VanHeiden and husband Richard, Steamboat Rock, Iowa and Jeri Chambers and husband Rick of Commerce City, Colorado; four grandchildren, Lauren, Kelsey, Colin and Payton Johnson, all of Wichita, Kansas; three step-grandchildren, Katherine and Garrett Smith of College Station, Texas and Elizabeth Gotski of Colorado Springs, Colorado; also other relatives and friends.
In keeping with his wishes, Professor Johnson will be cremated. No services are planned at this time.
