Michael Herbert Nolting came into this world on the 10 th day of May in 1971, at Bothwell Hospital in Sedalia, the first of two sons born to Herbert “Butch” and Karen Meyer Nolting. Mike embraced the role of big brother, first to Ryan and then Shawn.
He was a typical Morgan County boy, spending time deer hunting, watching and playing sports, helping out with the cattle on the farm, and hanging out at the Lake of the Ozarks whenever he had a chance. If you knew Mike, you knew he was an avid NASCAR fan as well as a Kansas City Royals and Chiefs fan. He made several trips to Talladega over the years with friends and family to watch his favorite driver Dale Earnhardt. He was also rewarded this year as a Kansas City Chiefs fan, enjoying every moment of their journey to the Super Bowl.
He was a 1989 graduate of Versailles High School, where his big smile and kind heart were evident in the many friendships he had. During his high school years, Mike participated in Basketball, Track, and drummer in band. Mike attended State Fair Community College after high school. He earned his CDL license.
It was while he was working for Pepsi that he happened to notice the cute girl working at the local convenience store in Pilot Grove. With the encouragement from a co-worker and an exchange of phone numbers, that chance meeting led to a wedding on February 6, 1999, at the Versailles United Methodist Church. On that day Mike married his soul mate, Kim Kraus, for the next twenty-one years they devoted their lives to each other and their daughters, Kayla and Britney.
His church family at the Versailles United Methodist Church were important to him and encouraged others around him in faith including his family. He was confirmed, married, children baptized, and now laid to rest at this very church over his life of 49 years.
Over the past nine and a half years, Mike was a Machine Operator with Union Pacific Railroad, which he truly enjoyed the friendship of his colleagues. He liked being able to work with his team of friends while also helping the safety of the trains.
Family was important to Mike and he took every opportunity possible to be with them. Family vacations, holiday gatherings, and lake time with family were some of the things he enjoyed most but no matter the venue, he loved being around family. He loved attending his daughter’s sports activities and also volunteered as a line judge throughout their volleyball careers in high school. He was never shy about making his presence known during his daughter’s games while loudly spreading his encouragement for his daughters and the Stover Bulldogs. He also enjoyed sporting events with his family including traditions like Missouri Tigers games and the Royals World Series Parade.
It was a little over a month ago Mike became very ill and for the next four weeks his family loved and encouraged him to battle for his life; which he did until, September 15, 2020, at the University Hospital in Columbia. That Tuesday afternoon Michael Herbert Nolting received the promise of eternal life which was given to him through his baptism and confirmation so many years ago.
