Mary K. Cox, age 58, of Holts Summit, died Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at Barnes-Jewish Health Center in St. Louis.
She was born May 23, 1953, in California, Missouri the oldest daughter of Henry Adam and Frieda Anna Strobel Raithel. On February 10, 1973, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Russellville, Mary was united in marriage to Donald M. "Don" Cox, who survives at their home.
She was a 1971 graduate of Russellville High School. In 1975, Mary received her BS in Education from Lincoln University. She completed her Masters in Education through Lincoln University and the University of Missouri.
Mary began her teaching career in the Eugene school district. For most of her career she taught First Grade in the Jefferson City Public School District, teaching at East and West Elementary schools and retiring in 2005 from the Callaway Hills Elementary school in Holts Summit.
She was a lifelong member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Russellville.
Mary was an avid reader. She enjoyed being a member of her Book Club and especially enjoyed sharing her joy of reading with others. She stayed busy working her garden, traveling with her family, buying presents and most of all spending time with her granddaughter.
In addition to her husband of 38 years, she is survived by her children, Brian Cox of Lee's Summit and Kelly Cox of Kansas City; her granddaughter, Quinn Cox of Lee's Summit; her sisters and their husbands, Sarah and Terry Baker of Holts Summit; Becky and Mitch Verslues of Lohman, Liz Strobel of Lohman and Barbara and Gene Snellen of Henley; a sister-in-law, Janet Fleming; a brother-in-law Jay Cox of Mesa, Arizona; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Beverly Raithel, a brother-in-law, Hewitt Strobel and a sister-in-law, Patricia Cox.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 16, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Russellville with Rev. Paul Young officiating. Interment will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Russellville.
The family will receive friends from 2:00-6:00 P.M. Sunday, January 15, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Russellville. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society or the Trinity Lutheran Perpetual Cemetery Fund.
