Marvin Elroy Proctor age 85 of Russellville and the Enon community, passed away Friday, August 6, 2010, at the Harry S Truman Veterans Memorial Hospital in Columbia, of complications due to declining health for the past four and a-half years.
He was born on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1925, the son of Harry Louis and Nellie Amos Proctor, who preceded him in death. On August 2, 1947, at the parsonage in Enon, Elroy was united in marriage to Gloria Kohm.
He was involved in farming until his health no longer allowed him to do so.
Elroy was such a proud veteran and so honored to have served his country. He was a highly decorated veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theatre from 1945-1946. During this time he received the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He was injured on the island of Luzon in the Philippine Islands. After three days in the jungle he was rescued and air lifted to an evacuation hospital where he spent several months. His orders then were to do occupational duty in Tokyo, Japan, where he guarded the quarters of General Douglas McArthur. On May 5, 2009, Elroy was accompanied by many WWII vets, who flew via Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to experience the World War II Memorial. He recently stated that the experience was one the greatest highlights of his life.
He was a lifelong member of the Enon Baptist Church and also a member of the Disabled American Veterans Post 17 in Jefferson City.
Elroy was an avid lover of horses. It was his only hobby and he enjoyed sharing it with his family. He was also involved in team pinning in his later years, even competing at the Missouri State Fair at age 69.
In addition to his wife of 63 years, he is survived by one son, Marvin D. Proctor of Enon; two daughters, Marilyn Proctor (Charlie) Walker of Jefferson City and Sandy (Steve) Sanders of Lake St. Louis; two brothers, Emmett (Lawanda) Proctor of Russellville and Melvin (Ginny) Proctor of Lee's Summit; two sisters, Imogene Baysinger of Olean and Laverne Miles of Russellville; two sisters-in-law, Norma Jean Proctor of Russellville and Dorothy Stacy of Columbia; a brother-in-law, Leroy Smith of Russellville; fifteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, 28 nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews, other relatives many and friends.
He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Leah Sanders, a daughter-in-law, Jamie Proctor, two brothers, Kenneth Nelson Proctor and Glendon Proctor, a sister, Neva Hogg Smith and two brothers-in-law, Aubrey Baysinger and Arthur Hogg, Jr.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 10, at the Enon Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Phillips officiating. Interment, with military funeral honors, will be in the Enloe Cemetery west of Russellville.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 P.M. Monday, August 9, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Russellville.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Community Living Center at Harry S. Truman Hospital in Columbia, where Elroy spent the last three plus years of his life.
