Marjorie Catherine (Hendricks) Nelson-Phipps

Marjorie Catherine (Hendricks) Nelson-Phipps, 97, of Stover, Missouri, formerly of O'Neill, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at St. Marys Health Center in Jefferson City, Missouri. Marjorie (Margie) was born in Atkinson, Nebraska on Feb. 4, 1915, and was the last living child of the Oscar and Edna Hendricks' family. Marjorie lived in the O'Neill/Atkinson area most of her life, however she graduated from High school in McAllen, TX. On April 25, 1936, she married Paul Nelson and for forty years lived on the Nelson Ranch, 20 miles northeast of O'Neill. Born to this union were Naomi Jean of Stover and Paul A. of O'Neill, who continues to operate the ranch that has been in the family for more than 125 years. A talented woman, Marjorie was always active in community events and many church activities. Initially, she was active and taught Sunday School and Bible School at the Paddock Union Church. She sang at most funerals held at the community church. She was a member of the Spencer Wesleyan Church and taught Sunday School there for many years also. Later in life she was a leader in the O'Neill Wesleyan Church. As a gifted local artist she was involved in organizing the Ranchland Art Group and served as its president for several years. She painted many pictures of local interest and historical significance. " Margie" taught art classes for many local youth and adults in the area. She was a life time member of the Holt County Historical Society. She was a charter member of the Holt County Farm Bureau and for many years served in many roles for the organization. Marjorie was also in the Republican Women's group.
Marjorie loved to be around others and to lend a helping hand no matter the chore. She befriended everyone she met and had no enemies. When her first husband passed away in March of 1978, her son and family moved to the ranch. She first moved to Spencer and later to O'Neill, where she was involved in many activities in both communities. If there was a need she volunteered to help. She married a longtime friend William Hubby in May of 1979. He passed away in 1984. Then on December 27, 1992, she married Rev. Charley Phipps. Together they pastored and led the O'Neill Wesleyan Church until their retirement in 1997. They then moved to a retirement center near Sedalia, Missouri, to be near her daughter Jean and husband Dr. T.T. Hoyne. Charley passed away in September of 2001. For the past few years Marjorie had resided in the Golden Age Living Center in Stover. Survivors include: children Naomi Jean and husband Dr. T.T. Hoyne of Stover and Paul Arden Nelson and wife Nancy of O'Neill. Four stepsons: Ray Phipps and wife Wilma of Black Hawk, South Dakota; Lloyd Phipps and wife Jan of Fallbrook, California; Dave Phipps and wife Marian of Omaha, Nebraska; and Bernie Phipps and wife Wanda of Branson, Missouri. Four grandchildren: Brad Nelson and wife Jennifer, O'Neill; Scott Nelson and wife Tammy, Sebastian, Florida; Beth Lenz and husband Tim, Dayton, Wyoming; and Sara Crumrine and husband Doug, Newton, Kansas. Brother-in-law, John Sutherland. Eight great-grandchildren; Four step-great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husbands: Paul Nelson, William Hubby and Charley Phipps; brothers: Herald Hendricks and wife Lucille; Mark Hendricks and wife Arla and Joe Hendricks and wife Mary Alice; sisters: Lucille Sutherland and Elva Frickle and husband Connie. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 1, 2012, at the United Methodist Church, O, Neill. Burial will be at the O'Neill Cemetery. The family suggests Memorial contributions be given to a local or national Parkinson's Association, The Bible Living Ministiries, Inc. PO Box 9165, Rapid City, SD 57709-9165, or to a local church youth group. Arrangements are under the direction of the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover and the Biglins Mortuary in O'Neill, Nebraska.
