Lorenz Otto Strobel, age 89, of Lohman, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at his home, which had been in his family more than 100 years. He was born on the family farm near Lohman, on May 18, 1924, a son of John George and Anna Kathryn Plochberger Strobel. On November 10, 1948, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Russellville, Lorenz was united in marriage to Ellen A. Buchta, who survives at their home. He was an Army veteran, serving his country in World War II, achieving the rank of Staff Sgt. Lorenz was a lifelong farmer, working alongside his brother Hugo, on the Strobel Brother’s Farm in Lohman. He was a faithful, lifetime member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lohman, serving as Sunday school superintendent for many years and on the church council. He was also a member of the Parish Education committee and sang in the church choir for more than 60 years. Lorenz served on the Farmer’s Bank of Lohman Board more than 50 years, 29 as President. He was a member of the German Mutual Insurance Company and served on the Heisinger Bluffs Board for many years. He was active in the Lohman Community Club, served as a leader with the 4-H club, was a member of the Cole County Extension Council and with the local NFO and MFA Boards. He was a former member of the Russellville-Lohman American Legion Post 476, where he was active with the honor guard. He was a current member of the Roscoe Enloe American Legion Post 5 in Jefferson City and the VFW Post 35 in St. Martins. Lorenz was proud of his service to his country. For the past 50 years, he and his wife, Ellen honored his fellow servicemen by placing American Flags on their graves at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Lohman. He also had the privilege of being a member of the Honor Flight for World War II Veterans to Washington DC a few years ago. Lorenz looked forward to cooking molasses every year with his neighbors. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing horseshoes, going dancing, making wine, singing, reading, playing cards, wood working and hearing and telling a good joke. In addition to his wife of 65 years, he is survived by three children and their spouses, Harold and Mary Ann Strobel of Havelock, North Carolina; Linda and Mike Wozniak of Hendersonville, North Carolina and Mark and LaRese Strobel of Russellville; one sister-in-law, Gertrude Strobel of Lohman; six grandchildren, Kristen and husband Jim, Brian and Loren, Nathaniel, Cory and Jena and husband Brett, two step grandchildren, Kelly and husband Henry and Chase, three great grandchildren, Keagen, Tinleigh and Xavier “Z”, four step great grandchildren, Paxton, Gavin, Connor and Scarlett, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Lorenz was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Leonard Elvin Strobel, two brothers, Oscar and Hugo Strobel and three sisters, Hulda Weber, Frieda Raithel and Alvina Heidbreder. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lohman with Pastor Edward Merckel officiating. Interment, with military funeral honors, will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, March 14 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lohman. Memorial contributions are suggested to Heisinger Bluffs or St. Paul’s Parish Education Fund.
