Lawrence M "Sarge" Hiller, age 82, of Versailles, died Thursday, January 24, 2013, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City.
He was born August 31, 1930 in Corydon, Pennsylvania, a son of Marvin R. and Ione Rodgers Hiller. On September 27, 1957, in Conway, South Carolina, he was united in marriage to Thelma L. Lake, who preceded him in death August 29, 2002.
Lawrence was a career serviceman with the United States Marine Corps, retiring after 20 years active duty and 10 years in the Reserves. He served his country in the Korean War and was an Air Traffic Controller at the time of his retirement.
Following his retirement, Lawrence stayed busy. He co-owned the Glass and Collectibles Shop in Versailles with his wife, enjoyed attending the local flea markets and auctions and also operated a lawn care service, mowing yards from the Lake of the Ozarks to Versailles. In his spare time he drove a delivery truck for the Gates Corporation in Versailles.
Survivors include three sons, Harold "Sonny" Sanders of Fortuna; Larry Hiller, Jr., of Versailles and Lloyd Hiller and wife Lynda of Versailles; one daughter, Linda Sanders of Versailles; two brothers, Ron Hiller and wife Loretta of Michigan and Roy Hiller and wife Sharon of Colorado; three sisters, Sharon Salzman and husband Paul, Doris Fullen and Bonita Babcock and husband Don all of New York; seven grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Alan and one sister Winifred.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 27, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Versailles. In keeping with his wishes, interment in the Union Cemetery in Rocky Mount will be private.
