Larry A. “Butch” Zurmiller, age 69, of Stover, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2020, at Boone Hospital in Columbia with his wife and children by his side.
He was born August 12, 1950, in Esbon, Kansas a son of Verlin and Violet Bender Zurmiller. On October 17, 1970, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Butch was united in marriage to Vicki Tietjens, who survives at their home.
He attended Stover High School and State Fair Community College. He was an Army veteran, receiving his honorable discharge on January 22, 1972.
On of Butch’s earliest jobs was with Elroy Koester at the Stover Hatchery. Even after starting his own business, Zur’s Upholstery, he continued to work on a part-time basis for Elroy.
He later went to work in Sedalia at Waterloo Industries, which is now Black and Decker, where at the time of his death he had been with the company for 36 years. Butch also drove a school bus for the Morgan County R-I school district in Stover for several years.
He was an avid outdoors-man who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved being back on the family farm, where he, along with the help of his son and his oldest grandson Morgan, literally built his dream log cabin, complete with a back porch perfect for watching the wildlife that also called the farm their home.
Anyone that knew Butch knew he loved to collect and work on a variety of things, especially cars; which was an on-going restoration.
He was a devoted husband and dad, who loved being with his family, especially his grandkids.
In addition to his wife of almost 50 years, Butch is survived by three children, Alisa Zurmiller of Boonville; Kelly Thornton and husband Ryan and Ben Zurmiller all of Stover; seven grandchildren, Morgan Miller, Heaven Zurmiller, Bobbyjoe Zurmiller, Vivian Thornton, Owen Thornton, Chase Zurmiller and Dixie Zurmiller, three siblings, Bob Zurmiller and wife Debbie of Tipton; Kevin Zurmiller of Columbia and Kelly Steele and husband Dennis of Sedalia; a brother in law, Don Tietjens and wife, Susan of Baldwin; his step-mother, Linda Zurmiller of Stover; his step-sisters, Stacy Brenner, Shelly Hicks, Sheila Brown and Sunda Brenner, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Vernon, Gary, Rick and Dennis Zurmiller; step-sister, Shawn Brown and a nephew, Timothy Zurmiller.
In keeping with his wishes, he was cremated. A visitation will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2020 at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover followed by a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Paul's Cemetery in Stover. Inurnment will be in the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Stover with Tom Zurmiller, Kim Kellar, Jeff Bisag and Henry Utterbach serving as honorary pallbearers.
