Joy H. Ehlers, age 92, of Stover, died Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at the Golden Age Living Center in Stover.
She was born February 24, 1927 in Cole Camp, the only daughter of Louis and Ruth Rosenquest Brandes. She was baptized on May 1, 1927. On December 24, 1950 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stover she was confirmed. The confirmation verse chosen was Revelations 2:10, “Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.”
She was a graduate of Cole Camp High School. After she graduated, she worked in Kansas City for a shoe factory and for TWA.
On August 26, 1950, along with Richard and Irene Ehlers, she eloped in Springdale, Arkansas with Leonard Ehlers, who preceded her in death on November 25, 1992.
Joy and Leonard enjoyed going dancing with friends and playing Pinochle. Leonard would take her up in his plane when the weather was nice.
After she was married, Joy helped Leonard run the Skelly Station in Stover, sometimes driving the gas truck, from the mid-1960s until after Leonard passed away. She continued to run it with her son-in-law, Harvey until 1993.
The Skelly Station didn’t take all her time. She enjoyed being able to stay home and raise her daughter, Teresa, and later on being able to help with her grandbabies.
She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stover.
Joy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Harvey Pendleton of Stover; two grandchildren, Melanie Pendleton of Liberty and Brain Pendleton and Sandra Stroburg of Stover; two great grandchildren, Coby and Tierra Stark; along with other relatives and many friends.
Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Rueben Brandes.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 1, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stover, with interment in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, May 31, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover with a Prayer Service at 6:00 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Paul Lutheran Church or the St. Paul Lutheran School.
