Joseph Bigham, Sr.

June 6, 1939 — January 28, 2025

Joseph Bigham, Sr., age 85 of Versailles passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2025, at the Good Shepherd Care Center.

It was on June 6, 1939, that Noble "N.K." and Mildred (Stalcup) Bigham welcomed their son, Joseph into their home in Teague, Texas.

On January 31, 1962, Joseph was united in marriage to Laretta Cagle in Texas. Laretta preceded him in death on December 18, 2017.

Joe proudly served his country in the United States Navy. After his service, he worked as a truck driver and handled shop maintenance for a chemical transport company.

In his younger years, Joe had a passion for camping and dirt bikes, often including his son, Joe Jr., in the fun as soon as he was old enough to join him.

In 2006, Joe and his beloved wife, Laretta, retired and moved to Versailles, where they made many cherished memories.

Joe was a lifelong gun enthusiast and a hard worker. Even after his retirement, he kept busy by spending time outdoors, splitting firewood, and mowing the lawn on his zero-turn mower, activities he enjoyed doing with his son. He was also an active member of his church, where he loved spending time with his church family.

Above all, Laretta was the love of Joe's life. It was clear to all who knew them that he adored her, and even after her passing, it was evident that she meant the world to him. Family was his greatest joy, and he cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, especially during family gatherings.

Left to carry on his legacy is his son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Cheryl Bigham of Versailles; three grandchildren, Bethany Nickels and husband Dan of Versailles, Christa Koop and husband Kyle of Ft. St. John, British Columbia, and Rachel Cain and husband Cash of Eldon; five great grandchildren, Carson Nickels, Rivka Koop, Lily Koop, Vienna Koop, and Conway Cain, a brother-in-law, Dennis Williams of Bellville, Texas; along with nieces and nephews and numerous friends and church families.

In addition to his wife, Laretta, he was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Charles Bigham, and his sister, Martha "Cissy" Bigham Williams.

In keeping with his wishes, he was cremated.

A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the West Chapel Church in Stover.
