John "Wayne" Snelling, age 90, of Belton, formerly of Stover, passed away, Friday, April 8, 2016, at The Heritage in Overland Park, Kansas.
He was born June 30, 1925, in Zebra, a son of John Hugh and Edna Bea Mansfield Snelling.
Wayne was a 1943 graduate of Barnett High School. He was a decorated World War II veteran, serving his country in the US Army where he was wounded in combat in the Liberation of the Phillipines Campaign.
On September 3, 1950, Wayne was united in marriage to Ann Elaine Rastorfer at the Stover First Baptist Church. Ann Elaine preceded him in death April 3, 2015.
Wayne was employed with the US Postal Service as a Station Superintendent, serving in the Springfield area for many years before retiring in 1980. While in Springfield, they were active in East Avenue Baptist Church, where he was ordained as a deacon. He continued to perform that office in several churches for over 40 years.
Following his retirement, the Snellings returned to Stover, where they cared for family members and enjoyed spending time on their farm. Wayne stayed busy working on the farm, where he raised cattle and could spend time on his horse.
Wayne was an active member of the Stover First Baptist Church, where he faithfully attended the Men's Bible Study group and church services.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, and an active member of the Galloway-Martens American Legion Post 343 in Stover, serving in the funeral honors detail. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.
Wayne and Ann Elaine moved from Stover to Freeman, to be closer to family. While there they joined the Freeman Community Club. In 2010 they made a final move to Belton, residing just a few blocks from their daughter. They enjoyed traveling, especially to visit their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
At the time of Wayne's death, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Peculiar.
Survivors include three children, Wanda Mae Cox and husband Craig of Belton; Dr. Ronald Dale Snelling of Midlothian, Virginia; and Kenneth Paul Snelling and wife Kathy of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; one brother, Donald L. Snelling and wife Brenda of Fenton; and one sister, Jeanne Jones of Liberty; five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
In addition to his beloved wife of 64 years, Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter-in-law, Beth Elaine Snelling, and a sister, Wilma Taylor.
Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover with Pastor Tim Redding, Pastor Will Challacombe, and Pastor Kenny Shewmaker officiating. Interment, with military honors, will be in the Stover Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home on Saturday. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Peculiar.
There will also be a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 17 at the First Baptist Church of Peculiar, with a time of fellowship following.
