John "Butch" L. Lewis III

February 16, 1958 — May 23, 2014

John Luther "Butch" Lewis, III, passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 23, 2014, in Ivy Bend, Missouri. He was born February 16, 1958, in Anderson, Indiana, a son of Patricia and John L. Lewis Jr. John spent some time as a child in Tenneessee and loved it there. He worked hard his whole life, doing construction and anything with his hands. He served his country in the Army from 1976-1979. He had a big heart, and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. He was an outdoorsman, who LOVED to fish and hunt, which is what led him to Missouri, where he found a place to call home in the Ivy Bend community near Stover for the past ten years. John loved his dogs, especially his beloved dog Velvet, who was forever at his side. He was very proud of his family and a true friend to many. He will be missed by the many friends he made in his life. He is survived by his mother, Patricia Mitchell and stepdad, Larry; two daughters, Jennifer Billings (Jeremy) of Des Moines Iowa and Jade Lewis (Shawn Spangler) of Prior Lake Minnesota; three grandchildren, MaRae Menfee, Kamren Billings and Kayden Billings; four sisters, Lorna Paxson (Eldon) of Mt Ayr Iowa; Laura Paxson (Wayne) of Osceola Iowa;
Tammra Poore (Lonnie) of Baldwyn, Mississippi and Leslie Lewis of Des Moines Iowa; one brother, Greg Lewis of Des Moines; his former wife and life long friend Lola Lewis of Burnsville Minnesota; dear friend Sandy Davis (Rena) of Ivy Bend (his fishing and story telling buddy, who was more like a brother), his faithful canine companion Velvet, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. John was preceded in death by his father John Lewis and his nephew Gregory Lewis, Jr. A Celebration of John's life will be Saturday, June 7, from 5:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. at the Four Mile Community Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Memorial contributions are suggested to the John L. Lewis III Memorial Fund in care of his family.
