James E Newman

March 15, 1930 — October 25, 2015

James E. Newman age 85 of Stover, passed away Sunday morning, October 25, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born March 15, 1930, in Light, Arkansas, a son of Arbry and Clara Nelson Newman. On November 16, 1950, following a two week courtship, James was united in marriage to Christine Langford, in Fayetteville, North Carolina and she survives at their home.
He was a 1948 graduate of Stover High School. James was an Army veteran, serving his country in the Korean War.
James and Christine moved to Kansas City, where he retired from Ford Motor Company in Kansas City after 17 years of employment.
He was an avid bowler, participating in the Sundowners Bowling League in North Kansas City for many years.
After his retirement, James and Christine moved to the Stover area, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was always ready for a round of horseshoes, a game of checkers and most of all a good game of cards, which he was able to enjoy this past Friday evening with his wife and children. However, his greatest enjoyment came from being with his family.
In addition to his wife of almost 65 years, he is survived by five children and their spouses, Jimmy and Delilah Newman of Cookeville, Tennessee; Ann and Paul Luetjen of Cole Camp; Mary and Ralph Davis of Cookeville, Tennessee; Rebecca Elaine and Donnie Jackson of Baxter, Tennessee and Terry and Bea Sutton of Stover; one brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Debi Newman of Stover; a brother-in-law and his wife, Jim and Patsy Qualls of Monterey, Tennessee; 31 grandchildren, 67 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
James was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Michael Newman, five brothers, Robert, Virl, J.C., Clifford and Gene Newman, three sisters, Donie Anderson, Cresteen Newman and Betty Newman, a sibling who died in infancy, and one great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover with Rev. Dinzel Webb officiating. Interment, with military honors, will be in the Pleasant Union Cemetery south west of Stover.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 27, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover.
