James W. “Jim” Campbell, Sr. age 96, of Versailles, passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at his home.
He was born January 26, 1923, in Versailles, a son of Milton Wray Sr. and Emma Lee Ratcliff Campbell.
Jim was an Army Air Force veteran, serving his country from December of 1942 through December 1945 in World War II as a pilot, receiving three bronze stars for campaigns WD GO 33 and 40 in China, Burma and India in 1945. He also was awarded medals for the Asiatic/Pacific Theatre Campaign and the American Theatre Campaign. He received 3 overseas Bars, the Victory Ribbon and the Missouri Veterans Medal, along with Marksman medals.
Following his honorable discharge, Jim returned to Versailles and went to work with AT&T, serving the central Missouri’s area telephone needs for 25 years as a lineman and later as a technician. He retired from Southwestern Bell after 50 total years of employment with the local telephone providers.
While working for the phone company, Jim met a fellow telephone company employee, Louise Greenup. Jim and Louise married on May 10, 1953, in Eldon and she preceded him in death on September 25, 2010 and after 57 years of marriage.
Jim was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Versailles.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 104 in Versailles, a charter member of the Rolling Hills Country Club in Versailles, served 35 years with the Versailles Fire Department and 35 years with the Versailles Lions Club.
Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting and working in his yard. In the past few years he could be found on his back patio, reading and enjoying being outdoors. He especially looked forward to visits from his grandkids and his great granddaughter.
Survivors include his son, James W. “J.C.” Campbell, Jr. and his wife, Dani, brother, Milton Campbell Jr. and his wife Lois of Versailles; grandchildren, Jessie Elmtalab and her husband Cyrus and Garrett, great granddaughter, Mina Elmtalab, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, his aunt and uncle, Jake and Frances Campbell who helped raise him, one brother, Ed Campbell, seven sisters, Gussie Campbell, Dimple Campbell Cornett, Nell Garrison, Eva Watts, Annie Hull and two infants.
The family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Sunday, December 22, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Versailles.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 23, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Robert Ross officiating. Interment, with military honors, will be in the West Lawn Addition of the Versailles Cemetery.
