H. Emil Steffens, age 86, of Stover, passed away Sunday, September 29, 2013, at the Golden Age Living Center in Stover.
He was born November 10, 1926, in Cole Camp, a son of Carl and Sophia Muller Steffens. He was baptized March 7, 1927 and confirmed April 6, 1941, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cole Camp. The confirmation verse chosen was Matthew 28:20 "...and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world." On January 27, 1978, in Stover, Emil married Nadyne Bugh, who survives.
Emil attended school in Cole Camp. He served his country in the United States Army. He was employed with the Benton Co R-I School District in Cole Camp for 32 years, working in the maintenance department and as a bus driver. Emil was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Stover. He was a gifted craftsman, especially in woodworking. He enjoyed being outdoors, mowing lawns and feeding the local wildlife. He also spent many hours watching high school sporting events. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters Susan Roe and husband Vernon of Cole Camp; Jana Kennedy and husband Fred of Cole Camp and Brenda Steffens of Stover; a sister, Verna Witte of Stover; a sister-in-law, Leona Steffens of Cole Camp; a stepson, Terry Bugh and wife Becky, two stepdaughters, Peggy Bay and husband Bob and Cindy Gardner and husband Mark; five grandchildren, Molly Roe, Megan White, Scott Case, Sara Kueper and Dustin Case, four great grandchildren, along with step grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Leonard Steffens and two grandchildren, Julie and Jana Roe. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 3, at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Stover with Pastor Erik Rottmann and Vicar Gerald Kurka officiating. Interment, with military honors, will be in St. Pauls Lutheran Cemetery in Stover. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover with a Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to Cole Camp R-I Education Foundation, Morgan County R-I Industrial Arts Class and Benton County Hospice.
