H. Dwight Mertgen

March 21, 1938 — December 1, 2014

H. Dwight Mertgen, age 76, of Florence, passed away Monday, December 1, 2014, due to injuries sustained in an accident west of Stover.
He was born March 21, 1938, on the family farm near Florence, a son of Harry and Edith Wear Mertgen.
Dwight was a 1956 graduate of Stover High School and served his Country in the United States Army in the Military Police.
For more than 30 years he worked for Phillips Pipeline in Jefferson City, retiring as a Gauger Operator Engineer.
He was a lifelong member of St. John United Church of Christ in Florence.
He served on the Morgan County R-I school board in Stover for sixteen years, fourteen of those as President.
Dwight enjoyed hunting, fishing and visiting with friends over a good cup of coffee. However, his greatest enjoyment came from the time he could spend with his family. His door was always open to the many people in his extended family.
Survivors include two children and their spouses, William C. and Kim Mertgen of Warsaw and Kristina and Terry Payne of Florence; one brother, Bill Mertgen of Florence; eleven grandchildren, Desiray Marriott and husband Adam, Taylon, Tharyn and Daxton Payne, Corbin, Carsyn and Chance Mertgen, Ricky Askins, Cora Hill and Dalton and Cole Baker, his precious great granddaughter, Jerra Lynn Marriott, along with numerous kids who called him grandpa, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Dwight was preceded in death by his father, mother, stepfather, Elmer Houchen and sister, Evelyn Sue Watring.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 6, at St. John United Church of Christ in Florence. Interment will be in the St. John UCC Cemetery in Florence.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday, December 5, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. John United Church of Christ.
