Gilbert L. Stanley, age 89, of Stover, died unexpectedly Friday, April 23, 2010, at his home.
He was born January 8, 1921, in Kansas City, Missouri, a son of Orville and Ruth Elizabeth Huddleston Stanley. On October 21, 1941, Gilbert was united in marriage to Betty Rose Goodman in Kansas City. Betty preceded in death August 5, 1997.
He was an Army veteran, serving his country during World War II.
Gilbert was employed at the General Motors-Leeds Plant, retiring as a lead man.
In 1963, Gilbert and Betty moved from Kansas City to the Stover area.
He was a member of UAW Local 93. Gilbert was a life member of VFW Post 5902 in Gravois Mills, where he served as Commander and was a volunteer for the MRC Food Bank at the VFW Hall in Gravois Mills for many years.
Survivors include two sons, Gilbert E. Stanley and wife June of Jefferson City and Guy Stanley of Stover; three daughters, Ruth Hall and companion Scott Cochrane of Lake Ozark; Diana Morey and husband Cliff of Arlington, Kansas and Lori Whittle and husband Bill of Eldon; one brother, Guy R. Stanley of Higginsville; two sisters, Joan Goodloe of Lexington and Grace Cindrich of Independence; seventeen grandchildren, thirty-one great grandchildren-with number thirty-two due in May, his first great-great grandchild is due in October, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Arthur O. Stanley, two brothers, Earl D. and Otto Stanley, two sisters, Elmira Harold and Berniece Delleck and one great granddaughter.
Funeral services, with military honors, will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 27, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Versailles with Rev. Gene Burnett officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 27, at the funeral home.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation will take place following the service with private inurnment at a later date.
