Garry Lee Scott

March 10, 1940 — April 23, 2020

Garry Lee Scott, age 80 of Gravois Mills, passed away shortly before midnight, Thursday, April 23, 2020, at his daughter’s home.

He was born March 10, 1940, in Kansas City, Kansas a son of Clarence Edward and Marjorie Stakley Scott; however he was raised by his grandparents, John and Sarah Stakley.

In 1955, he met his bride to be, Darlene Eslinger.  Four years later on October 22, 1959, Garry and Darlene were united in marriage.

Garry worked as a construction surveyor which meant he was constantly going where the work was; living in California, New Mexico, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas and Missouri.  While on these jobs he worked as an ironworker, installing structural steel and metal roofing to coal and nuclear power plants.  He was most recently employed by Hancock Construction and retired from Bachtel Builders in Linn Creek as a construction superintendent.  He worked for Dexter Slagle surveying located in Versailles.  He also helped with the construction of the Jim Dornan Chevrolet building in Versailles.

He enjoyed being near the Lake of the Ozarks, where he could fish and hunt for morel mushrooms.   He also loved hitting the open road on his motorcycle and even spent a few years motocross racing.

Anyone who knew Garry knew he loved to golf.  He was a very active member of the Rolling Hills Country Club and also worked at the club as a mechanic. He could fix anything and would stay with a project until it was completed to his satisfaction.   He was a good friend, who enjoyed being with his family and lending a helping hand to those in need.

Garry is survived by Darlene, his beloved wife of more than 60 years, three children, Gary Scott, Jr.  and wife Julie of Jacob’s Creek, Kansas; John Scott and wife Sheri of Redfield, Kansas and Sheri Lynn Scott of Gravois Mills; a sister-in-law, Alma Keith of Eldorado Springs; two special cousins, Kenny and Richie Taylor; nine grandchildren, Josh, Cassandra, Codi, Stephanie, Shenisa, Devon, David, Kevin and Macie; 23 great grandchildren Hunter, Attlyn, Jade, Taylor, Bracy, Miguel, Summer, Arya, Aiden, Maverick, Kaylyn, Preston, Lilly, Colton, Hayden, Allie, Lexi, Brazton, Phoenix, Alexis, Karah and Michael, along with other relatives and many friends.

Garry was preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law, Alden Keith and two half-brothers.

A family graveside service will be held Monday, April 27, at 1:00 p.m. in the Osceola Cemetery, social distancing requirements will be observed.  A Public Celebration of Garry’s life will be held at a later date.
