Stover native, Galen Marriott passed away peacefully shortly after midnight on Friday morning, October 23, 2020, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City where he had been a patient for the past week.
Galen was a Halloween baby, coming into this world on October 31, 1945 and was the youngest of three children born to Arnold and Thelma Gillespie Marriott. His two older sisters were thrilled to finally have a younger brother and were devoted to spoiling him.
Growing up in Stover you could often find Galen hanging out at the local Cree-Mee with his cousin Eddie. Like most young men in the 60’s he liked muscle cars and was fortunate to be able to own several over the years.
He was a 1963 graduate of Stover High School and shortly after graduation Galen enlisted in the Missouri National Guard, receiving his honorable discharge in November of 1971.
For all of Galen’s adult life he drove a gravel truck; more than 30 of those years were spent working for the Missouri Highway Department maintaining and repairing the local highways in the mid-Missouri area. After retirement he was self-employed with Marriott Trucking until his health began to fail him this past year.
Galen’s proudest moment came with the birth of his daughter Traci. For the remainder of his life the time he spent with her; whether it was working alongside each other, watching NASCAR and Chiefs football; to just hanging out, were the most enjoyable moments in his life.
He was a man of few words, quietly going about his business but always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Galen is survived by his daughter, Traci Marriott of Stover; one sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Merle Welpman of Bedford, Texas; four nephews and a niece, Ivan Sidebottom, Rob Sidebottom, Randy Sidebottom, Jeff Welpman and Jana Welpman, several great nieces and nephews, along with other relatives and a host of friends.
Galen was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Donna Sidebottom and a nephew Kim Sidebottom.
In keeping with his wishes he was cremated.
A celebration of Galen's life will be Sunday, April 18, 2021 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Stover. Military Honors will be rendered at the Legion Hall at 2:00 p.m.
