Elizabeth Wadick

September 26, 1915 — March 30, 2015

Elizabeth A. Wadick, age 99, of Stover, passed away Monday, March 30, 2015, at the Golden Age Living Center in Stover, where she had resided for the past two years.
She was born September 26, 1915, in Linn, the sixth of eleven children born to Henry and Regina Orscheln Schroeder.
Elizabeth, Tiz or "Sis" as she was also fondly called, grew up on the family farm located in the rolling hills of the Ozark Mountains in Osage County. Even though times were tough, the days were long, and hard work was a part of everyday life, everyone looked forward to evenings which were spent on the porch saying prayers and listening to fiddle music after supper.
While visiting family in Kansas, Liz caught the eye of a cowboy, who up until then, had avoided capture by many a young filly. On July 22, 1936, at St. George Catholic Church in Linn, Elizabeth Schroeder was united in marriage to Charles Wadick, who promptly took his new bride back to the state of Kansas. Liz's heart never left Missouri, and after acres of wheat fields, four girls, lots of chickens and suffering through the dust storms and droughts, Charlie and Liz decided it was time to move.
In 1952 they settled in the Little Buffalo area south of Stover, where she awoke at 5:00 a.m. every day so she could complete her tasks of caring for her family. Raising livestock, planting and tending to her garden, canning, cooking and baking were all part of a days' work. She always made sure her family and guests were well cared for and could not leave her home hungry. She never let anything go to waste and fixed many meals using turtle, squirrel, rabbit, or coon. Her philosophy was "if it grew in the garden or ran through the yard, it was fair game."
Liz was an accomplished seamstress, making her daughters' clothes, and as her girls provided her with grandchildren, she made each one a quilt and crocheted Afghans for them throughout the years.
Since family was so important to her, Liz looked forward to the holiday seasons, however, the season that she looked forward to the most was deer season. Family and friends would travel to the farm at Little Buffalo, where for 50 years she prepared a breakfast of biscuits and gravy for 20 or more on the first Sunday of opening day. Even during her stay at the nursing home she would be found wearing her camouflage, during her most favorite time of the year.
In addition to her work on the farm, she was employed as a carpet binder, worked at Johnson's Corner, was a caretaker for many children and later worked as a Home Health Care Nurse, taking care of the elderly.
Liz was never one to sit still, so in her "spare time" she helped establish a 4-H group for the local kids, was a charter member of the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Versailles, where she remained active in the Altar Society, was a Farm Bureau Guild Member, and served on the election board for 50 years.
However, in spite of all her accomplishments, her family, her faith, and deer season were the most important things in her life.
Liz is survived by her four daughters, Carol Miles of Stover; Donna Jones and husband Robert of Kansas City, Kansas; Margaret Sue "Peggy" McCaw and husband Charlie of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Joelle Jones and husband Ray of Dixon; sixteen grandchildren, forty-two great grandchildren, twenty great-great grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Charlie on August 28, 2000, a son-in-law, John "J.M," Miles, a great grandson, Gannon Spradling, her parents, Henry and Regina Schroeder, and all of her siblings, Angie Schaefer, Leo Schroeder, Pat Schmitz, Fritz Schroeder, Dennis "Bud" Schroeder, George "Jack" Schroeder, Ted Schroeder, Romy Schroeder, Rita McCormick, and Billie Schroeder.
The family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Friday, April 3, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover with the Rosary prayed at 4:30 p.m.
The family will also receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Versailles. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church with Father Patrick Dolan officiating.
Entombment will be in the Greenmore Memorial Gardens in Barnett. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church or the Golden Age Living Center, and may be mailed % Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home, PO Box 64, Stover, MO 65078.
