Edwin Yorke "Ed" Wheeler, age 86 of Stover, died Friday, January 18, 2013, at Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia.
He was born November 18, 1926, in Kenmore, New York a son of Roland and Sybil Yorke Wheeler. On August 29, 1958, in Kenmore, Ed was united in marriage to Carolyn Palmer, who survives at their home.
He left school during World War II to enlist in the United States Naval Construction Battalion, familiarly known as the Seabees. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Kenmore to finish his education. Ed was a graduate of Oklahoma State University where he received his Bachelor's degree. He received his Master's Degree from Syracuse University and was attending Michigan State University where he was working on his PhD in Forest Product Engineering. In 1967 he received a Federal Government Grant from the University of Missouri where he was hired to modernize the Forest Product Industry in Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
Ed began his working career with Setter Brothers in the Cost Account Department in Cattoranqus, New York, later working for W-F Manufacturing as the Western District Sales manager in Buffalo, New York. In 1971 he, along with Stanley Gant and Alvin Nolting, co-founded G-W Lumber Company in Stover, with the help of Virgil Gant and Howard Hoffa. He owned and operated the business until retiring in 1989, to do forestry consulting work in the Morgan County area.
He was an original founder of the Missouri Forest Product Association, which was established in 1969. He was associated with Forest Products Research Society, a member of the Galloway-Martens American Legion Post 343, the Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, City Council, the Industrial Development Corporation and the United Methodist Church all located in Stover.
All his life, Ed was very interested in trees, how and where they grew and their many uses.
In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by one son, Randall Wheeler and partner Cynthia Jolly of Stover; one daughter, Holly Wheeler and husband Joseph Gareri of Greenbelt, Maryland; one brother, Vincent Wheeler and wife Merlene of New York state; two sisters, Margie Ames and husband Mike of St. Louis and Marilyn Arnest of San Francisco; three granddaughters, Erica Wheeler and Lien and Maya Gareri, along with nieces, nephew, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Audrey Cox.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 25, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover with Rev. Russell Lucas officiating. Interment, with military funeral honors, will be in Stover Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday, from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover.
