Duane H. Amos

May 25, 1950 — April 25, 2016

Duane H. Amos, of Jefferson City, formerly of Russellville Missouri, died in his home on Monday, April 25th. He was born on May 25, 1950 to Mildred Louise (Shikles) and Herschel A. Amos, their only son. On June 17, 1972 he married Linda Huhman at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sedalia and she survives him in their home. Duane was raised on the family farm in Cole County Missouri and continued farming throughout his life. He graduated from Russellville High School in 1968. He was a member of the first class of State Fair Community College and played on the school’s first basketball team, an experience that brought him tremendous pride throughout his life. He earned his Associate’s Degree from State Fair and went on to earn two bachelor’s degrees from the University of Missouri Columbia and Lincoln University respectively. In 1989, he completed a Master’s Degree in Public Administration at the University of Missouri.
Over the course of his career, he worked for Mutual of Omaha and American Family Insurance companies as well as the Missouri Department of Corrections, the Office of Administration for the State of Missouri and ultimately concluded his public service career as the Director of Risk Management at the Missouri Department of Transportation. While he served with the Office of Administration, he helped the Missouri State Legislature create what would become one of the nation’s largest self-insurance (“shared-risk pool”) funds for local governments and public entities, commonly known as the MoPERM. He often told a story about how the experience of the local community swimming pool where his daughter’s spent their summers inspired his commitment to self-insurance for small local public entities. He took the experience he had with the Office of Administration to the Missouri Department of Transportation to create their self-insurance fund. He also served on the Cole County Planning and Zoning Commission for the Moreau Township and then as the Commission’s Chair. He worked with the Commission as they adopted the Master Plan for Cole County.
But those who know him best always understood that Duane loved to work with young people whether coaching an AAU or Russellville basketball team, an elementary girls softball team, or teaching courses at the Lake Ozark campus for State Fair Community College and Central Methodist University. Duane found this work deeply meaningful, and his generosity and humor in turn touched countless young Missourians.
No day went by without music. He loved to sing and played his six guitars, his banjo and keyboard.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by both of his daughters, Katie Amos of Portland, Oregon and Adell Amos with her husband Brian Killingsworth of Eugene, Oregon, as well as his three granddaughters – the joy of his life - Jordan Larson of Brooklyn, New York, and Eleanor (Ella) and Mildred (Millie) Killingsworth of Eugene, Oregon.
