Donald Charles Mitzel, 84, of Columbia, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at the Neighborhoods by Tiger Place in Columbia. 

He was born on August 17, 1940, in Boonville, MO, a son of William Roy Mitzel and Helen Harris (Sly) Mitzel. On August 17, 1963, in Wilmette, IL, he married Mavis Elizabeth Bradley who survives of the home. 

Don was a 1958 graduate of New Trier High School in Winnetka IL. He later attended and graduated from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor's degree in Architecture. Don served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969. While in Chicago, he enjoyed the time he spent sailing and racing sailboats on Lake Michigan. After Don moved to Columbia in 1977, he owned and operated his own architecture firm. He was a member of the AIA (American Institute of Architecture) and the Rotary Club of Columbia. He enjoyed fishing all his life, and in later decades, took frequent trips to Canada, Alaska, and the Amazon River in Brazil. 

Survivors include his wife Mavis of 61 years; three children, Chad Mitzel of Chicago, IL, Erin McGaha and her husband Michael of Boonville, MO, and Megan Wilson and her husband Stephen of Columbia, MO; two grandchildren, Noah Wilson and Simon Wilson.

In addition to both of his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, William Roy Mitzel, Jr, and Robert Mitzel. 

Private graveside services will be held at a later date at the Pilot Grove City Cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of Meisenheimer-Page-Dady Funeral Home in Pilot Grove, MO.
