Darrell Schmidt, 76, of Tipton, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia surrounded by family. Born on October 7, 1948, in rural Tipton, Darrell was a son of Louis Henry and Geneva Ruth (Wiser) Schmidt.
On November 27, 1966, Darrell married the love of his life, Virginia Ruth Hodges, at Tipton United Methodist Church, beginning a beautiful journey of over 57 years together. Their marriage was a testament to love, loyalty, and companionship.
Darrell proudly answered the call to serve his country when he was drafted into the United States Army in 1969. Stationed in Heilbronn, Germany, he served with honor, achieving the rank of Sergeant (E-5). A patriot at heart, Darrell remained deeply proud of his military service.
Following his time in the Army, Darrell dedicated 44 years as a lineman and Operations Manager with COMO Electric Cooperative , where his coworkers became like family. Known for his strong work ethic and caring nature, he made a lasting impact on those around him. Darrell’s warmth went far beyond his career. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, calling his children and grandchildren daily to check in, share a laugh, and offer support.
Darrell had a tender heart, often helping those in need and contributing generously to causes close to his heart, including St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and the Shriners. He was a man of humor and kindness. He loved family gatherings and was always ready with his quick wit and laughter. Darrell loved spending time outdoors, farming his crops and hunting.
Darrell’s legacy lives on through his loving family: his wife, Virginia; three sons, Jeff (Tonya) Schmidt, Brian (Shannon) Schmidt, and Michael (Jennifer) Schmidt; four brothers, Gary Schmidt, Danny (Carolyn) Schmidt, Charlie Schmidt, and Bobby (Beverly) Schmidt; his sister-in-law, Betsy Schmidt; seven grandchildren, Madison (Mac) Gourley, Benjamin Schmidt, Wyatt (Rebecca) Schmidt, Owen Schmidt, Jackson Schmidt, Rachel (Jacob) Hoellering, and Rebecca (Jered) McCarty; his step-grandchildren, Marcos Morales, Christian Allen, and Nate Robles; and his two great-grandchildren, Nolan McCarty and Jace McCarty. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. His love for each of them was unwavering, and his presence will be deeply missed.
