Claude E. Cornett, age 91, of Stover, passed away Sunday, June 27, 2010, at the Golden Age Nursing Home in Stover.
He was born October 2, 1918, in Stover, a son of Acie and Laura Brown Cornett. On March 15, 1941, he was united in marriage to Maudie Meeks who preceded him in death February 5, 2008.
He was an Army veteran serving his country in World War II in the 25th Armored Engineer Battalion of the 94th Division. He served over seas from August 1944 until 1946 in Rhineland, Battle of Ardennes, Central Europe and Northern France. Claude was awarded Four Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, Two Over Seas Bars, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbons, Special Class Marksman Medal and Lapel Button for Bravery in Normandy.
Claude retired as supervisor from Finley Engineer Company in Lamar.
He was a member of the VFW Post 2591in Sedalia and a 37-year member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, also in Sedalia, where he and Maudie loved to dance.
Claude was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved to trot line and even after catching two 76 pound catfish, always said, "There's a bigger one than this out here just a waiting for us." He also loved to listen to his coyote dogs run at night.
He is survived by a son, Pat Cornett of Independence; one daughter, Brenda Cook and husband John of Stover; a daughter-in-law, Vickie Cornett of Slater; a sister, Ollie Arnold of Kansas City; five grandchildren, Clay Cornett, Donette Chrisman, Crystal Cornett, Pam Cornett and Punkie Stevenson, nine great grandchildren, Charlene, Colleen, Carrie, Clayton, Brandi, Amber, Brent, Jett and Baylie Jo, three great-great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife of 67 years, he was also preceded in death by
two sons, Donald Cornett and Denny Cornett and two sisters, Cleo Austin and Geneva Lindsay.
Funeral services will 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 1, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover. Interment, with military funeral honors, will be in the Stover Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 30, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover.
