Charles "Sonny" Pendleton

March 17, 1943 — September 20, 2020

Longtime Stover resident, Charles “Sonny” Pendleton passed away late Sunday night, September 20, 2020, at the Harry S Truman VA Hospital in Columbia.

He was born March 17, 1943, in Savannah, Mo the oldest of Wilse and Icle (Wood) Pendleton's five children.

Sonny grew up in the St. Joseph area and was a graduate of Savannah High School.

He served his country in the United States Marine Corps from August of 1961 until receiving his honorable discharge in May of 1966.  While in the Marine Corps he was a pitcher for the softball team.

He attended college for a bit but soon followed in the family profession of over-road-truck drivers.

On August 18, 1971, Sonny was united in marriage to Carol Elton at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Stover.  They honeymooned on the banks of the local creek, sleeping next to the campfire under the stars.

As a professional driver, he drove mainly for Crete and Dakota Lines.  By the time Sonny decided to retire he had logged more than 2 million miles and received numerous awards for safe driving.  Earlier in his career, Sonny was accompanied on his trips by his wife and son, until Chas was old enough to attend school.

The family spent many vacations camping and fishing on the lake.  Then in the early 80’s Sonny and Carol made Stover their permanent home, opening up the One Stop Country Store at the corner of Highway 135 and T, serving local and lake traffic for more than 20 years.

Following his retirement he was able to spend time fishing with Chas in crappie tournaments and also for pleasure. He also loved working in his garden.  However his greatest enjoyment came from being with his family, especially his grandkids and great grandkids.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Pendleton of the home; three children, Elizabeth “Liz” Garvin and husband Pat of Wayne, Nebraska; Gayle Webb and companion Pam Garber of Versailles and Charles “Chas” Pendleton and wife Chelsea of Stover; a son-in-law, Christopher Arnold of Stover; two brothers, Wilse “Buddy” Pendleton and wife Sharon of Savannah and Harley Pendleton of St. Joseph; two sisters, Elaine Smith and husband Gary of the state of Colorado and Bridget Cross and husband  Mike of St. Joseph; nine grandchildren and their families, twelve great grandchildren, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Courtney Arnold, and son Charles (Chuck) Pendleton.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday, September 27, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover with Graveside services immediately following in the Stover Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the family to help with the funeral expense in care of Gayle Webb.
