Alfred Vach Simpson, age 71, of Stover, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, in Versailles, while in route to the hospital
He was born May 1, 1939, in Highland (Jewell County) Kansas, a son of Gerald and Lella Walker Simpson. On April 7, 1962, in Kansas City, Missouri, Alfred was united in marriage to Clara Lea Acton. Clara preceded him in death May 8, 2007.
Alfred was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Corporal. While with the Marines he was deployed to southern Florida, to stand ready to defend his country during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
For more than 20 years, Alfred worked as a Union Electrician for Armco Steel in Kansas City.
Alfred was a devoted family man, and enjoyed the many hours he could spend with his grandkids. He especially liked building and tinkering on projects around the house with his grandchildren by his side. He never knew a stranger and many young people called him Grandpa, because his home was a place they always felt welcome.
Survivors include two daughters, Vacha Campbell and husband Dennis of Kansas City and Laura Simpson of Stover; one son, Michael Simpson of Stover; two sisters, Wauneta Winfrey and husband Don of Gravois Mills and Leta Fay Oswalt of North Kansas City; six grandchildren, Gerald Simpson, Colleen Campbell, Krystal Offield and husband Dillon, Vach Campbell, Michael Simpson, Jr., and Jazmine Simpson, one great grandson, Caleb Campbell, also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife, Alfred was preceded in death by his parents,one brother, Gerald Dean Simpson and twin sons.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 26, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover. Interment, with military funeral honors, will be in the Stover Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until service time on Saturday.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Camp Wonderland in Rocky Mount, Operation Smile or the American Heart Association.
