Alfred Lee “Fred” Norman, 67, of Tipton, passed away Thursday, September 14, 2023, at his home.
He was born February 19, 1956, in Versailles, son of Gene Allen and Ruth Elizabeth (Schmitt) Norman.
On May 27, 1983, in Wellsville, he was married to Diana Rae (McDannold).
Fred was a lifelong resident of Tipton, graduating in 1974 from Tipton High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Westminster College and a master’s in educational administration from the University of Missouri, graduating Summa Cum Laude. He taught history and physical education and coached basketball at Wellsville, Waynesville, and Eldon. Later he was high school principal at Tipton for 18 years. After retiring, he served on the Tipton school board and established Support Source K12, a consulting business in support of school administrators.
A sports enthusiast, Fred coached basketball and softball over the years. He was proud and supportive of his daughter, Madi, who played softball for the University of Missouri. After she graduated, he missed softball so much that he started umpiring. It is fitting that Fred’s funeral will be held on the 22nd day of the month, as both his and Madi’s college jersey numbers were “22.” Fred also enjoyed restoring old cars and fishing with Madi.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Diana, of the home; three children, Madison Lee Gerlach (Atom), of Jamestown, Travis Reed, of Lee’s Summit, and Rachel Reed, of Osage Beach; grandchildren, Chance Hill, Austin Reed (Chelsea), Bailey Reed; Luke Gerlach; a granddaughter on the way, Andi Lee Gerlach; a sister, Cindy Stack (Dwight), of St. James; a brother, Brad Norman, of Columbia; a niece, Katie Hogenmiller; and nephews, Steve and Ryan Stack.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 22, 2023, at Meisenheimer-Page-Dady Funeral Home in Tipton, where the family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time.
Burial will be at a later date in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Tipton.
